You have questions. We have answers.

Why do I need a domain name?

Bottom line – your customers expect it. In today’s marketplace, people have access to a large amount of information right at their fingertips, and can easily find and compare businesses. Without a domain name and website, there’s a strong change customers won’t know your business even exists if they can’t find it online.

97% of people learn more about a local company through the internet. And while you can set up business pages on various social media platforms, many customers will avoid them for the fear of being scammed. Having a website, along with professional email tied to your domain name, will show potential customers your business is legitimate and safe.

With a domain name, you can:

How do I know if a domain name is available?

You can check the availability of the domain name by typing it into the search bar at the top of this page. We’ll tell you immediately if someone else already owns it, and offer alternatives if the domain you want is taken.

You can also find out who owns a domain using our WHOIS Lookup tool

We also offer a Domain Backorder service where you can purchase a backorder credit to give you a chance to get the domain you want if or when it goes to auction.

What is domain registration?

Domain name registration is the process of finding a web address (like and then signing up to use it.

While you don’t technically own the domain, once you’ve registered it, it’s yours to use as long as you continue paying the annual registration fee.

What’s the difference between .com, .net, .org, etc.?

The letters after the period in a web address are known as the domain extension. For example, in, the .com is the extension of the NSIGNIAcorp domain name. The five most common domain extensions are .com, .net, .org, .co, and .us.

A .com domain extension is open to everyone and by-far the most popular for any business. It is widely recognized as “official” by most people. The .com extension is can also lead to more favorable search rankings according to, and it carries must more authority that one with a new or unfamiliar extension.

Much like the .com extension, .net is open to anyone. What was originally intended for internet service providers or networks has now become a popular alternative to .com websites. The .net TLD might be a nice option for tech- or web-based companies because it implies network and technology.

The .org extension was originally designed to represent not-for-profit organizations but is now available to anyone. It’s a popular domain extension for many non-governmental organizations, nonprofits, politicians and political parties, and online communities. Many web users associate .org with a trustworthy and reliable source of information, but they don’t typically associate it with commercial brands, so if you’re planning on selling products or services through your site, .org is not recommended.

How long is my registration good for?

How long your domain registration lasts can vary depending on the domain you purchase. Many domain name registrars will allow customers to register domains for 10 years at a time, but typically customers will register domains for one to three years.

If you want to extend your registration, it’s easy to renew your domain with NSIGNIA®. You can choose to manually renew or set up auto-renewal, so you ensure it stays registered to you.

What else should I keep in mind when deciding on a domain name?

When searching for a good domain name, keep these 4 things in mind:

  1. Reflect your brand. Ideally, your domain name should be your business name, since that’s how customers will think of you.
  2. Keep it short. Shorter domain names are easier for customers to remember.
  3. Avoid numbers or hyphens. Customers might not remember to include hyphens, and if they hear your web address with a number, they won’t know if you’re using the numeral 5 or “five” spelled out. If your business name has a number in it, register both versions – with the number and with the number spelled out.
  4. Register more than one domain. Keep your name safe by registering both common misspellings, as well as various domain extensions, such as .org, .net, .info, etc.
